You’re driving on your way to work and see a bicyclist. What do you do? How do you keep the bicyclist safe and yourself away from harm? Here are some tips to keep you as a driver – and cyclists – safe out on the road:

  • Don’t drive distracted. Statistics show that if you text while driving a car, you’re 23 times more likely to crash. Before you realize it, you could veer out of the lane and hit a bicyclist.
  • Check your blind spot before turning right. If a bicyclist travels straight and you turn, you could cause an accident. Most accidents between bikes and cars occur this way.
  • Pass slowly and give the bicyclist space. Keep at least three feet of space between you and the bike—more if possible.
  • Look before you exit your car. Look out your window and check to see if a bike is coming. Don’t “door” a bicyclist as you open your door and exit your car.
  • Understand bicyclists’ vulnerability. Be mindful. Cars can weigh thousands of pounds, whereas a bike can weigh around 20 pounds.
