Living in Western New York, you may imagine that wintertime would hold the record for the most number of car accidents. You might think that ice-covered roads, excessive wind, and cars covered in snow not properly cleared off would result in more accidents. While these conditions may make driving more difficult, summertime actually is the season that sees the most car accidents.

According to research organizations like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), summer months experience the highest levels of car accidents, with August being the highest. There are a few reasons that explain why:

Teen Drivers on the Road: Summer months see the most teen drivers on the road. In the summer, teens are out of school and on the roads instead. During these months off from school, teens spend up to 44% more time driving during the week compared to when school’s in session. This increased time on the road, plus their inexperience, leads to more car accidents than in other months.

Construction: Good weather usually is related to an increased amount of road construction. Road construction easily can lead to unfamiliar detours, distracted drivers, and congestion. Also, slower driving through construction zones can lead to aggressive driving and road rage.

Alcohol: Western New York has a limited amount of time to enjoy backyard barbeques, pool parties, and lakeside celebrations. Even with the restrictions from the coronavirus, it’s common to relax with a cold drink on a hot day. However, many people choose to get behind the wheel after drinking. According to the NHSTA, there’s a significant increase in the number of alcohol-related accidents in the summer. In fact, there are almost twice the number of car crash fatalities in the summer months than all other times of the year combined.

Practicing safe driving is important any time of the year, but it’s important to remember that during the summer months, the risk of getting into an accident is higher.
