For already-certified women and minority businesses in New York, we’ve got great news for you.  Your certification has been extended to 5 years from the date of certification.  Moreover, all newly-certified MWBEs will be certified for 5 years, instead of the prior 3-year term.

What are we talking about? This New York State program certifies eligible woman-owned and minority-owned businesses in New York State in an effort to level the playing field around public contracts and the like.

Quoting the agency responsible for this program:

The New York State Department of Economic Development, Division of Minority and Women’s Business Development (DMWBD), pursuant to Article 15-A of the Executive Law, has extended the certification period from three (3) to five (5) years for all currently certified NYS MWBEs.

What does this mean to current MBEs and WBEs? If you’re used to your certification expiring after only 3 years, you’ve now got an extra two years on your certification.  Be sure to log into your portal and print out your updated certification. Then make a note on your calendar for the new date on which it expires. Be sure to timely submit your recertification paperwork.

For questions about the MWBE program in New York State, and for any other entrepreneurship questions, feel free to reach out to the attorneys at The Coppola Firm. The Coppola Firm is a certified WBE through New York State, New York City, Erie County, and the City of Buffalo. We’d be glad to help!
